In an exposé by The New York Times, George Devolder-Santos, who in November became the first gay Republican elected to Congress as a non-incumbent, is accused of fabricating portions of his resume and biography and omitting information about his personal experience.
According to The Times, Santos, 34, who previously failed his quest to win the seat, which includes portions of Queens and Long Island, in 2020, overstated some of the specifics of his employment history.
For instance, according to a biography posted in the “About Me” section of an archived version of Santos’s campaign website, he began working for Citigroup as a “associate asset manager” following his graduation from New York City’s Baruch College, a public university. However, Danielle Romero-Apsilos, a spokesperson for Citigroup, told the Times that the company was unable to confirm Santos’ employment. She said that Santos’ self-described job title was foreign to her and mentioned that Citi had sold up its asset management division in 2005, when Santos would have been a teenager.
Santos’ attorney, Joe Murray, responded in a brief statement when contacted by the Times to comment on the charges against him, saying that it was “no surprise that Congressman-elect Santos has enemies at The New York Times who are trying to destroy his good character with these libellous allegations.”
